First Alliance Church

Calgary, AB

First Alliance Church is a community of several thousand people who gather from all walks of life and ages to connect, grow, serve and share in worship.

Located in southeast Calgary, Alberta, First Alliance Church is 122,000 sq. ft. and one of the largest houses of worship in Canada. It strives to build a meaningful community through small group connections, and it creates opportunities of worship and experiences through music, drama, visual and technical arts.

Applied Electronics upgrades First Alliance Church with state-of-the-art live production facility to better connect, grow and serve its community.

The 80-year old church has expanded a number times in recent decades to accommodate its flourishing population, with an average weekend attendance of 3,700 attendees. Its sanctuary seats 2,260 people and is fully equipped with state-of-the-art audio visual systems. Its Children’s and Youth wing is about 36,000 sq. ft. and includes a children’s indoor play gym. Its abundant classroom and large group spaces, along with its multiple café areas are designed for young families and children to collect and connect.

Incorporating technology into the production of the services is one way to ensure that the church continues to build a meaningful community across physical boundaries. The church’s worship services, which include lively music, creative storytelling elements and messages of hope, are streamed live and saved in their series archive where online visitors to their website can find videos on-demand and resources from previous weekend services on topics of interest to them.

A Live Production Workflow

Capturing live footage of the services are four new Hitachi studio cameras, two Ross PivotCam PTZ cameras, and a Sony full HD PTZ camera with a Sony PTZ camera remote controller, for the church’s live event production and content creation.

Two compact Christie 1DLP laser phosphor HD projectors display the camera footage on two 171 x 298 inch Stewart Filmscreen SnoMatte 100 large scale front projection screens – one located on each side of the stage.

Located in the main sanctuary, the open production studio is equipped with a Ross Ultrix software defined routing platform – a compact and powerful combination of routing, multi-viewers, audio processing, and control, without requiring special hardware as advanced features can be added at any time via simple software licensing. A Ross Carbonite Black midsized production switcher is used to deliver unprecedented performance in a remarkably cost-effective package.

Building a Meaningful Community Across Physical Boundaries

Production crew communications is achieved with a Clear-Com RM704 4-channel intercom/headset base station, a Clear-Com MS704 4-channel intercom station with built-in 2amp power supply, a Clear-Com BS410 base station that supports two rugged, light-weight, ergonomically designed Clear-Com BP410 beltpacks.

In the control room, an AJA Ki Pro Rack file based 1RU recorder and player is used to perform broadcast quality up, down, cross conversion during recording or playback. Complementing the file based workflow, Ki-Pro Rack offers high quality, ready-to-edit file capture, designed to get material from source to editorial as quickly as possible, especially for house of worship applications.

To live stream its worship services, an AJA HELO H.264 streaming and recording standalone appliance with both SDI and HDMI I/O the ability to simultaneously stream out to their content delivery network (CDN), while encoding and recording H.264 files to AJA Ki-Stor storage modules simultaneously.

Two NEC 70-inch LED commercial grade display monitors with anti-glare screens that allow maximum visibility for easy group monitoring in the control room. A Tektronix WVR5200 multi-format, multi-standard compact rasterizer waveform monitor offers uncompromising quality, HD/SD support, versatility, and the capability to handle 3G-SDI.

The system also includes two Ross openGear frame, two Ross analog utility distribution amplifiers, a Ross dual high performance equalizing distribution amplifier, a Ross master reference and 1RU 3G / HD / SD SDI test signal generator, an AJA FS2 dual channel universal frame synchronizer and format converter, and an ArKaos professional stage server with smooth visuals for First Alliance Church’s productions.
