Humber River Hospital Command Centre

Toronto, ON

Toronto’s Humber River Hospital (HRH) has installed a 22-screen video wall to display analytics in what it calls Canada’s first hospital command centre, built in collaboration with General Electric Healthcare (GEHC).

“Over the next few months, the command centre will enable an increase in capacity equivalent to opening a small community hospital within our walls,” says Barbara Collins, president and CEO of HRH, which is reportedly North America’s first fully digital hospital.

Comprising a matrix of 1.4-m (55-in.) liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the wall of analytics (WOA) showcases real-time and predictive data from multiple systems throughout the hospital, alerting staff to potential health-care delays and bottlenecks.

Applied Electronics integrated Jupiter Systems’ [Canvas cross-platform collaborative visualization system, Jupiter System’s Fusion Catalyst display wall processor, and NEC’s] LCDs with GEHC’s Analytics Hub software, which makes the same information viewable on personal computers (PCs) and mobile devices.

The 418-m2 (4,500-sf) command centre was developed to address issues with capacity, safety, quality and wait times that have preoccupied Canadian hospitals. HRH expects it will increase efficiency by 20 per cent.
